Who should attend?
The WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits is an advanced-level qualification for professionals and enthusiasts wishing to acquire a detailed understanding of the spirits of the world and develop the tasting skills required to accurately describe and evaluate a spirit
This qualification is intended to build on knowledge and skills gained from the Level 2 Award in Spirits. You’ll acquire a deep theoretical understanding of the techniques used in spirit production, from the processing of raw materials to post-distillation operations. Through a combination of tasting and the application of theoretical knowledge you will learn to explain confidently why spirits look and taste the way they do and how and why they differ from each other.
Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal spirits of the world and give information concerning the key factors influencing style and quality. They will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of spirits in a variety of situations.
Unit 1 – Theory of the Spirits of the World
- A detailed understanding of the techniques used in spirit production:
- Processing of raw materials
- Alcoholic fermentation
- Post-distillation practices
- Factors affecting the style and quality of spirits, studying eleven core spirit categories in detail:
- Scotch Whisky
- Rye Whiskey
- Tennessee Whiskey
- Caribbean rum
- An overview of 23 additional spirit categories, focusing on:
- Principal production methods
- Key styles
- Key labelling terms
Unit 2 – The Analytical Tasting of Spirits
- How to taste and describe spirits using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits®(SAT)
To gain the Level 3 qualification, candidates will be required to:
- a multiple choice paper of 50 questions
- a question paper requiring short written answers
- an internally set and assessed blind tasting of two spirits
(Course material, instruction and WSET® examination in the English language)
Included in the course price are: – The course material, the Spirit Samples, the Wine and Spirit Education Trust examination (which is recognised in over 70 countries of the world), the teaching, as well as access to our study support site during the duration of the course.
N.B. We advise you to complete the registration process for the course at least 4 weeks prior to the course start so that you can complete the eLearning Module in preparation for the course as well as start working through the course material prior to the start of the classroom course.
You should plan for a minimum of 60 hours of self study for this course.
Required prior knowledge: – WSET® Level 2 in Spirits or equivalent
(N.B. if you are not sure, contact us, so that we can help you choose the course level according to your needs and objectives).
Guided learning hours: – It is recommended that a student should allocate a minimum of 84 hours of study to successfully complete the full programme of two units. The hours will usually be a combination of taught and private study time. It is recommended that the teaching delivery time for the programme should not be less than 30 hours
Learning outcomes – at the end of this course, the candidate will be able to:
- Understand the principle factors involved in the production of spirits and how they influence style and quality
- Understand the key characteristics and labelling terms of the selected global spirits and how legal frameworks and production choices influence their style and quality
- Understand the key characteristics of other named global spirits, their labelling terms and key production choices that are made
- Describe the key characteristics of selected global spirits and use the description to identify a spirit’s quality level, giving supporting reasons, and its category
- Progression Routes – Upon successful completion of the WSET® Level 3 Award in Spirits, the candidate may progress to the following qualifications:
WSET® Level 2 in Wines: – For individuals seeking a core understanding of wines, this qualification explores the major grape varieties and important wine regions in which they are grown. You will learn about the styles of wines produced from these grapes as well as key classifications and labelling terminology.
WSET® Level 3 in Wines: – For individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides detailed understanding of the factors that affect style, quality and price. You will learn how to assess wines accurately and use your understanding to make authoritative recommendations
Please note that: – The WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines or the WSET® Level 2 in Wines and Spirits, or an equivalent level of experience, is required for entry to the WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines programme
Our IBD Distilling Courses:
IBD – Essentials in Distilling: – an eLearning course: -The production of most distilled products involves many common features and the purpose of this qualification is to provide a basic grounding in the technical features of the distillation processes for both distillery production personnel and for people employed in distilling companies (and related industries), but in non-technical roles. The scope of the FD syllabus provides an introduction to the technology common to all aspects of distilled products production, but also allows candidates to select, in one syllabus section, to study some specific details related to the production of the principal distilled products (viz. whisk(e)y, brandy, rum and neutral spirit (for gin/vodka)
IBD – General Certificate in Distilling: – an eLearning course: – The General Certificate in Distilling (GCD) gives international recognition of a basic, under-pinning knowledge and understanding in the principles of distilling operations. The GCD has been designed for candidates who may have little or no formal academic or technical qualification. Typically a candidate will be employed as a senior operator or team leader in a brewery or packaging plant, however the scope of these examinations will enable candidates from smaller brewing operations to obtain this recognised qualification. This examination is open to anybody with interest in brewing or beer packaging. They are a measure of basic knowledge (theoretical and practical) underpinning brewing, packaging and associated operations.
